Harju steps, Jyväskylä

Rendezvous in the heart of the city:

1) Pedestrian precinct,
pearl of the city centre
Lively and different, Jyväskylä’s pedestrian precinct lies at the heart of the city, a meeting place for inhabitants and visitors alike and also a favourite venue for events. The award-winning pedestrian precinct is the place for live music, shopping centres, boutiques, gift shops, cafés, restaurants, pubs and many other services. A full 440 m in length, the pedestrian precinct serves some 80 000 residents and visitors every day of the year.

2) Harju – a slice of nature in the centre of the city
The Harju ridge is the best known of Jyväskylä’s observation points and green areas. Ascending its steep slope are the Nero steps, which were named after former city engineer Oskar Nero. The stone steps are flanked each summer by a fantastic array of flowers. The area contains a network of footpaths, a sports ground, summer theatre and – in the Vesilinna water tower – Central Finland Natural History Museum, an observation platform and panoramic restaurant. Enjoy this relaxing area of city centre nature!

3) Market square has a unique atmosphere
The market place on the corner of Väinönkatu and Yliopistonkatu is open all year. Particularly in summer the market is a lively spot for people to do some shopping and meet over coffee. A cup of coffee on a summer morning amid the bustle of the market is a small but unique pleasure!
