Examples of theme tours; tours can also be planned according to your group’s requirements:

Jyväskylä’s lakes and Harju ridge
A bus tour offers an excellent opportunity to explore the history of Jyväskylä as well as its present day. On the trip you will see and hear why the city that has arisen between the Harju ridge and Lake Jyväsjärvi, separated from Lake Päijänne, is called a city of education, culture and sport and why many Finns would like to live in Jyväskylä. Seminaarinmäki hill and the university’s newer campus areas on the shore of Lake Jyväsjärvi provide fine examples of architecture from different periods. The Laajavuori and Hippos recreational centres serve both top-flight athletes and ordinary fitness fans throughout the year. The tour lasts 1.5 hours, price from € 99. Transport is not included in the price.

Summer excursion to the island suburb of Säynätsalo
Säynätsalo is comprised of eleven islands in Lake Päijänne. It is Jyväskylä’s unique island suburb, the natural beauty of which is highly appealing. During the bus tour we take a comprehensive look at Säynätsalo’s attractions. We visit the church designed by Armas Lindgren and Bertel Liljeqvist as well as Säynätsalo Town Hall, completed in 1952 and designed by world-famous architect Alvar Aalto. We also take in Haikka lighthouse, the lush scenery of Lehtisaari, Satasarvinen hill, and admire the shimmering waters of majestic Lake Päijänne. Visitors will also learn the colourful history of the factory-owning Parviainen family and experience the island community of Säynätsalo as it is today. The tour lasts 2 hours, price from € 120,50. Transport is not included in the price.

Alvar Aalto tour of the central city area
In the central area of Jyväskylä visitors can enjoy the pearls of architect Alvar Aalto’s production from a period spanning six decades. During the tour you will hear how Alvar Aalto had the ability to dumbfound his public and close colleagues. On the bus tour you will see public and private buildings designed by Aalto, for example, the Workers’ Club and the Defence Corps Building dating from the 1920s. Planning of the city’s Administrative and Cultural Centre first began in the 1960s and the most recent building to be completed is the City Theatre (1982). Finland’s first Finnish-language teacher training college evolved into Jyväskylä College of Education, the buildings comprising which were finished for the most part in the 1950s according to designs by Alvar Aalto. The University of Jyväskylä’s park-like campus on Seminaarinmäki hill is explored on foot. The basic tour takes 1.5 hours, price from € 99. Transport is not included in the price.

Ecumenical tour of Jyväskylä
The Jyväskylä Region features numerous church buildings which represent different churches and religious communities. The tour can be planned according to the customer’s wishes, taking in visits to several churches or congregational buildings. Fascinating venues, for example, include Säynätsalo church from the late 1920s designed by Professor Armas Lindgren, the Catholic Saint Olaf’s church and Alvar Aalto’s Muurame church with its Italianate influences.

Examples of theme tours; tours can also be planned according to your group’s requirements:

Jyväskylä new and old – a walking tour of the Lutakko area
This tour takes you into the area once occupied by the Schauman plywood mill, which in recent years has become a fashionable new residential area and home to various high-tech facilities. In Lutakko old and new Jyväskylä literally come face to face. Sights during the tour include the Renaissance-style Schauman Mansion, Innova, the city’s tallest building, Jyväskylä Paviljonki, Jyväskylä’s international congress and trade fair centre, and Travel Centre, a modern rail/coach interchange. The secrets of the smoke stack sauna will also be revealed during the tour. There will be commentary on the area’s history during the days of the plywood mill, Lutakko today, and plans for future development. The tour lasts 1.5 hours, price from € 99.

From Nikolainkulma to Seminaarinmäki – explore the city centre on foot
The centre of Jyväskylä, bounded by Lake Jyväsjärvi and the Harju ridge, is easy to explore on foot. During the tour you will hear among other things about how a cart track developed into a prize-winning pedestrian street, an old market place became Church Park, and the first Finnish-language teacher training college blossomed into a multidisciplinary university. The tour takes in both old wooden houses and more modern architecture, not forgetting the many buildings designed by world-famous architect Alvar Aalto. The tour lasts 1.5 hours, price from € 99.

Following in Alvar Aalto’s footsteps
Jyväskylä offers a marvellous opportunity to discover the works of the renowned Finnish architect Alvar Aalto from a variety of periods. Visitors are treated to tales of Aalto’s colourful personality. During the tour we see the Workers’ Club, the Defence Corps Building and the city’s Administrative and Cultural Centre. We tour the University Park on Seminaarinmäki hill, where, in the 1950s, one of Alvar Aalto’s most significant projects was brought to fruition – the buildings of Jyväskylä College of Education, as it was then. After the guided tour participants can deepen their knowledge of the master architect’s work at the nearby Alvar Aalto Museum. The tour lasts 1.5 hours, price from € 99.

As recounted by gravestones – a walking tour of Jyväskylä’s Old Cemetery
What do the mature deciduous trees and old gravestones have to tell us about Jyväskylä’s history? What did the names Kreeta Haapasalo, Elsa Heporauta, Wolmar Schildt or Robert Kiljander mean to Finnish culture? How did the establishment of Finnish-language schools gather pace from the growth of the small town and stimulate its artistic life? The tour lasts 1.5 hours, price from € 99.

Walking tour of parks and statues
Why not get to know Jyväskylä city centre’s verdant and recently refurbished parks, as well as the statues located in them? In Church Park the young Minna Canth leans on the parapet of a bridge and dreams, perhaps, of her future career as a writer and social trendsetter. The memorials in Cygnaeus Park remind us of the wooden church that once stood on the spot and of Uno Cygnaeus, the father of Finland’s elementary school system. The statues in Lounaispuisto Park, in turn, are linked by music. Join the tour and hear fascinating details of the city’s history, the cityscape, and naturally of the figures that shaped its past. The tour takes 1.5 hours, price from € 99.
